This annual event is a lively opportunity for students to ‘limber up’ early in the academic year. Students will design collaboratively in teams of 6-8, mentored by a practicing architect. To heighten a fun sense of competition, students are encouraged to work as a team ‘representing’ their School. Individuals are encouraged as well; you will be married-up with a team on the day.

Re-thinking ‘museum’ — House of Living Art
The role of museums in the 21st century is changing. The site for this year ‘s Charrette has been intended as a storage facility for the nearby British Museum, but has remained moth-balled since cost overruns of the Great Court conversion. The brief for Charrette ‘08 will ask students to develop proposals mixing public open space, residential, and possible new concepts for ‘museum’ such as ‘open storage’.
The British Museum, which is associated with our site, and linked by tunnel, is a repository of ancient art from foreign lands of the past 3 millennia and the new site has the potential of creating a centre for contemporary art of the 21st century. Nothing older then 2000.
This would both distinguish this new collection, juxtaposing the vibrancy of the art of the new and living artists with the standard collection which are bleached, damaged, discoloured, stripped from their context, often misattributed; but are works, based on archeology, are of incomparable beauty and are inviolate expressions of the spirit of a lost artist.
Uniquely living artists in residence would feature prominently (this is done at the Pompidou Centre), with their working studios on display. The artist and his studio will be the focus; in the same way that sculpture/ architect Phidias is the missing element of the Elgin Marbles. This Living museum will include guest studios, residential, and display for international exhibitions, art fairs, resulting in a fuller understanding of the life and work of the artist. Restoration is itself an emerging artform and can be incorporated as a living art in the new museum, as open studios.
