AIA UK annual cycle tour

Architecture of the east Kent coast

Saturday, 19 July 2008

  • Cost £7 + train fare
  • 6 CES Units
  • Meet at Victoria Station 10:45 for the 11:03 train. Buy round trip tickets to Ramsgate (with “Group Save”, 4 travel for the price of 2).

900 years of seaside architecture, swimming, sketching, fish and chips and beer—fun for the whole family. This tour essentially uses the Viking Coastal Trail, a car-free bike route that follows the coast. As in the past the tour will be lead by Benedict O'Looney, M. Arch, RIBA.

Start at Whitstable Railway station, look at the harbour, then follow the coast to Herne Bay for an exploration along the seafront. On to the ruined Saxon/Norman church at Reculver. Then follow the coast to Birchington—detour a few blocks inland to see the early Arts and Crafts bungalows, then on to look at the architecture of Margate. Finally, a push around North Foreland to the pretty bay at Broadstairs, and finish at nearby Ramsgate Harbour. Railway stations dot the journey, allowing riders to depart early, should the need arise.
