Sustainability in Ancient Italy

Earn 18 AIA/CES Learning Units in Sustainability in 1 week, 6-13 June 2010, on the Amalfi Coast.
In this specially designed on-site program, we will focus on sustainability practices used in ancient Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples as possible solutions to modern architectural and design issues.

AIA International Conference, Dubai International Exhibition Centre
AIA members have until 3 September to register for Cityscape Dubai: World Architecture Congress, for the reduced price of $350. At least 18 CEUs will be available — 7 in sustainable design. Available hotels near the convention center have rooms starting as low as 115 euros.

In addition to the program of the World Architecture Congress, the AIA program includes a Continental Europe chapter meeting on Sunday afternoon, 4 October, a reception that evening, dinner on 6 October and an exclusive boat tour of the Palm Island on Wednesday afternoon.

Chichester to Littlehamptom, West SussexVictoria Station DeparturePlease join members of the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter, as Benedict O’Looney M.Arch RIBA, leads a cycling tour thru Chichester and Littlehampton.
The tour will conclude with a tour of the East Beach Cafe in Littlehampton, guided by Peter Ayres, a member of the Heatherwick Studio team who designed the café.
Itinerary

| 11:45AM | Visit Roman/medieval town of Chichester, tour Pallant House Gallery, and lunch in town (bag lunch recommended) |
| 2:30PM | Tagmere Aviation Museum, halfway between Chichester and Littlehampton. In between Chichester & Littlehampton, stop for sketching. |
| 4:30PM | Arrive in Littlehampton, tour the East Beach Café, return to London at one’s leisure |

Please join members of the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter, as Paul Lincoln, director of policy and communications for the Landscape Institute, leads a tour of the public spaces of the Golden Lane and Barbican Estates.Following the destruction of the Blitz, the City of London Corporation commissioned two estates designed to bring residents back into the City. Designed by Chamberlain, Bon and Powell, Golden Lane and the Barbican estates now offer models of how to live in the City. This guided tour will examine the public spaces of these grade II listed estates.
Paul Lincoln is director of policy and communications for the Landscape Institute, an educational charity and chartered body responsible for protecting, conserving and enhancing the natural and built environment for the benefit of the public. He is a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association and has lived in Golden Lane Estate, one of the two estates to be viewed on this tour, for the past five years.
This tour is part of a series inspired by the exhibit ‘Le Corbusier at the Barbican’ and explores the impact Corbusier had either directly or indirectly on the Barbican and urban living in London.

“We designed the underground facility to be bright, fresh and open to the elements — an apparent contradiction for a basement. Economy was paramount so we moulded the necessary concrete retaining structure into a legible hierarchy of architectural components: columns, pilasters, beams, brackets and panels. Materials were lightweight and industrial but detailed to give the impression of a highly bespoke piece of architecture.”

Philip Gumuchdjian spent 18 years with the Richard Rogers Partnership where as Associate Director he was involved in high profile buildings, and masterplans. He co-wrote Rogers’ influential treatise on sustainability: “Cities for a small planet” which has been translated into 6 languages and sold over 30,000 copies. Gumuchdjian was Rapporteur at the UN Habitat II conference in Istanbul and was a member of the German Government’s Urban 21 panel. A visiting critic to the Architectural Association, the Royal College of Art, University College London and Harvard School of Architecture, Gumuchdjian’s work has been published and exhibited internationally.

This tour is part of a series inspired by the exhibit ‘Le Corbusier at the Barbican’ and explores the impact Corbusier had either directly or indirectly on the Barbican and urban living in London. A another private tour lead by Paul Lincoln, director of policy and communications for the Landscape Institute, discussing the impact of Corbusier’s ideas on urban living in London, will occur at the beginning of June.
