Featuring a dramatic exhibition design by Ron Arad Associates using the latest LED display technology, Ron Arad: Restless also includes architectural designs and immediately recognisable mass produced pieces. The site of St Martin-in-the-Fields is highly significant: a complex mix of buildings including the church, school social care facilities, residential apartments and the underground crypts and vaults. Please join members of the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter, as Paul Lincoln, director of policy and communications for the Landscape Institute, leads a tour of the public spaces of the Golden Lane and Barbican Estates.

Following the destruction of the Blitz, the City of London Corporation commissioned two estates designed to bring residents back into the City. Designed by Chamberlain, Bon and Powell, Golden Lane and the Barbican estates now offer models of how to live in the City. This guided tour will examine the public spaces of these grade II listed estates.

Paul Lincoln is director of policy and communications for the Landscape Institute, an educational charity and chartered body responsible for protecting, conserving and enhancing the natural and built environment for the benefit of the public. He is a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association and has lived in Golden Lane Estate, one of the two estates to be viewed on this tour, for the past five years.

Building Tour: St. Marylebone School

“We designed the underground facility to be bright, fresh and open to the elements — an apparent contradiction for a basement. Economy was paramount so we moulded the necessary concrete retaining structure into a legible hierarchy of architectural components: columns, pilasters, beams, brackets and panels. Materials were lightweight and industrial but detailed to give the impression of a highly bespoke piece of architecture.”
— Gumuchdjian Architects

Philip Gumuchdjian spent 18 years with the Richard Rogers Partnership where as Associate Director he was involved in high profile buildings, and masterplans. He co-wrote Rogers’ influential treatise on sustainability: “Cities for a small planet” which has been translated into 6 languages and sold over 30,000 copies. Gumuchdjian was Rapporteur at the UN Habitat II conference in Istanbul and was a member of the German Government’s Urban 21 panel. A visiting critic to the Architectural Association, the Royal College of Art, University College London and Harvard School of Architecture, Gumuchdjian’s work has been published and exhibited internationally.

Architecture of the east Kent coast

Saturday, 19 July 2008

  • Cost £7 + train fare
  • 6 CES Units
  • Meet at Victoria Station 10:45 for the 11:03 train. Buy round trip tickets to Ramsgate (with “Group Save”, 4 travel for the price of 2).

900 years of seaside architecture, swimming, sketching, fish and chips and beer—fun for the whole family. This tour essentially uses the Viking Coastal Trail, a car-free bike route that follows the coast. As in the past the tour will be lead by Benedict O'Looney, M. Arch, RIBA.

Start at Whitstable Railway station, look at the harbour, then follow the coast to Herne Bay for an exploration along the seafront. On to the ruined Saxon/Norman church at Reculver. Then follow the coast to Birchington—detour a few blocks inland to see the early Arts and Crafts bungalows, then on to look at the architecture of Margate. Finally, a push around North Foreland to the pretty bay at Broadstairs, and finish at nearby Ramsgate Harbour. Railway stations dot the journey, allowing riders to depart early, should the need arise.

AIA/UK Keynote Lecture 2007

Antoine Predock FAIA presented the AIA/UK 2007 Keynote Lecture at the RIBA Jarvis Hall on 15 May. This was held in conjunction with the United Visions exhibition, and RIBA President Jack Pringle and AIA National Secretary David Proffitt, AIA gave introductory remarks. Antoine Predock titled his lecture ‘West East’ giving a clue to his desert beginnings and current projects in the Far East.

Slide show→

Predock began his academic career studying engineering and it was through a fortuitous encounter with architect Don Schlegel that Predock focused his attentions on architecture. Early projects in New Mexico led to more significant projects such as the Arizona Science Center. A sense of earth, place, and light were consistent themes of these projects.

Predock’s design process includes the use of large collages and clay models. The use of sculptural modelling is evidenced in projects such as the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts that has a commanding presence in its mountainous setting.

The AIA Gold Medallist in his later projects showed a keen appreciation for the importance of the architectural procession through and around a building. The Canadian Museum of Human Rights currently in design showed a mastery of integration between massing, place, and promenade through an uplifting series of spaces.

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan, also in design, is a phenomenal project that creates a ‘Jade Mountain’ of marble and glass to house significant cultural artefacts.

Predock showed numerous other projects during the course of his lecture, and concluded with a lively question and answer session. Google video archive of the lecture.
