Event Description
Following the 2022 Conference theme of ‘Transformations’, the Extension Day will be a relaxed Tour of a narrow strip of London that has been radically changed in the last 10 years by increased transportation links (boat landings, new underground stations, complex biking lanes, etc.,) and by two iconic, destination hubs, Battersea Power Station and the new US Embassy. See what National Geographic has to say about the area HERE.
The Tour will start at 10:30am at Vauxhall Bus Station and wander along the pleasant Thames Path taking in many lesser known buildings by well-known architects (inter alia, Farrell, Lasdun, Arup, Timberlake, Rogers, Grimshaw, Gehry, Foster, Wilkinson Eyre, Wren).
It will then venture into what is known as the 9 Elms Corridor, a public realm open – despite its newness - to criticism and controversy as one of the less desirable areas of London. Even President Trump was unhappy with the US Embassy’s new neighbourhood.
Back to the riverside, the Tour will continue to short excursion into Battersea Park before returning to the Battersea Power Station Development area.
BPS’s Turbine Hall itself has undergone a massive transformation from its existence as a 1930-50s industrial landmark into London’s newest shopping and leisure complex. It is anticipated to be open to the public from 1 Sep 2022.
After the Tour, we should be able to have a leisurely lunch circa 12:30 on the riverfront. First round of drinks is included.
The area is easily accessible by public transport. Further details and instructions will be available closer to the day. Participation will be initially capped at 20, on a first come first served basis; however, we will maintain a waiting list and open up further slots if there is further demand.
If you are interested, please register by Friday 23 September.
