AIA Continental Europe Spring Conference 2023 - Sicily: Crossroads of Culture
When: Thursday 25 May 2023 - Sunday 28 May (optional extension Monday 29)
Where: Sicily
Description
Sicily is our next destination for an overview of the rich history, culture, and architecture that has influenced much of Europe over thousands of years. The AIA CE spring conference will start in Siracusa and the Island of Ortiga, key destinations of sailors from ancient Greece and other Mediterranean ports. This is also the first of many UNESCO World Heritage sites that we will visit during the conference, historical gems, rich in well preserved stone-paved streets and baroque architecture with a maritime heritage.
We will move on to Noto where we will visit more outstanding baroque architecture, including the Noto Cathedral and the Palazzo Ducezio. We will also experience the outstanding Sicilian culinary traditions, before proceeding to Catania, Taormina, Modica, Ragusa, Marzamemi and Caltagirone. Even the Etna volcano, with its imposing presence which has marked Sicilians' soul for generations, will be part of the lasting impressions that we will take home from this unique part of the world.
Modern architecture and urban design in Italy will be highlighted throughout the conference, starting with the work of Giancarlo De Carlo and the Renzo Piano G124 workshop, and their relationship with the region and city of Catania.
