AIA UK Chapter Bike & Sketching Tour – ‘Hythe Bay Spectacular’

See English countryside/seaside from Pluckley to Folkestone, and architecture medieval to modern, under the direction of a well-known architect and art historian.

Visit multiple English countryside/seaside towns – Pluckley, Appledore, New Romney, Dymchurch, Hythe, Sandgate and Folkestone.

Highlights include inter alia (and in no particular order): medieval and renaissance English architecture; materials and geology of Hythe Bay and SE England; Georgian architecture and military defences; Saga Group Headquarters (high tech/low energy project – Hopkins); public art (Folkestone Triennial); Folkestone Harbour Railway Station; Rocksalt Restaurant/Bar (Guy Holloway Architects)... perhaps swimming???

Fee: free for AIA UK Members, £10 for non-members.

Space is limited to 12 people.  AIA members will be given priority if the tour is overbooked. If you wish to add to the flat fee given to the tour leader, please feel welcome. There will be a lunch and dinner stops, but food and drinks are at your own cost.

Essential Notes:

  • You must provide your own bike

  • Make sure you bike is tuned and ready.

  • If you don’t ride often or haven’t ridden lately, do a few test rides. This is a more or less flat, easy ride - some off road - but it will be a long day in the saddle.

  • You must undertake the tour at your own risk! Wearing a cycle helmet is very strongly advised.

  • You must bring your own sketching materials.

  • You might consider swimming gear, if the weather is favourable.
