************

One Fen Court, at the heart of the City of London provides 41,000sqm of office and retail space over 16 floors. It takes its provision of first-class office space as a starting point rather than a finishing point of its architectural vision. At its core Fen Court carries a civic aspiration. It embodies an innovative human scale of design in the high-density eastern sector of the capital’s financial district.

The Garden at 120 is where the building’s civic and well-being aspirations really come to life. A 2,800 sq m garden designed in collaboration with German architects Latz + Partner is free to access and supported by a restaurant on the14th floor. The roof garden features a gently undulating perimeter promenade, espaliered fruit trees (an unusual sight in the City), a 40m-long linear water feature and a steel pergola draped in a grove of 89 mature wisteria plants that create a lush canopy for shelter on sunny days.

This new public garden in the sky is fast becoming one of the City’s most popular attractions and highlights the need for occupying under-used urban rooftops and providing free green and public space in the inner city. The building and its civic spaces at street and rooftop level also provide a powerful model for future city planning. This is a project in which health and well-being is paramount, and the public interest is considered as important as the private one.
