Description

Rolfe Judd’s vision was to create a place to shop, a place to eat, a place to work and a place to live all within the context of the historic heart of the Carnaby Estate in Soho.

Carnaby Court is the second of three projects Rolfe Judd have designed and delivered for Shaftesbury plc and all three reflect the increasingly important role that mixed use development is currently playing within city centre environments.

It was essential that the building form responded sensitively to the existing urban grain and the elevations were carefully developed using a subtle use of layering and framing to sit comfortably within their context. Colour was always an integral component of the design concept and it is the bold use of glazed French lava stone within the facades which gives the building it’s vibrancy. This also allowed us to give the two street elevations their own individuality through the use of differing colour palettes.

A much bigger building than it appears from the street, the quality of the internal open spaces needed to match that of the external facades and a series of understated internal courtyards were created to provide an appropriately calm residential environment a stone’s throw from the bustling West End.
