Hackney Town Hall Restoration
By Hawkins / Brown
Post-Tour discussion and drinks sponsored by Armstrong Ceilings.
The renewal of the Hackney Town Hall has come in the form of an exhaustive twelve-year restoration and refurbishment programme by Hawkins\Brown. In order to update and maintain the historical character of the building, many efforts and challenges were faced by the design team. By reorganising the building’s second story, the internal space was increased by two-thirds. The increase also includes the skilful transformation of two former service courtyards into full-height covered atriums. The atriums play an important role in the circulation and energy efficiency of the building.
Skilful as these new interventions are, the building at its heart remains an art deco masterpiece and it is the astonishing level of care and craftsmanship with which its original features and spaces have been restored that holds the visitor’s attention. Throughout the building lighting, panelling, flooring, upholstery, woodwork, ironmongery, walls and windows have all been lovingly and painstakingly restored to dramatically recapture the building’s original art deco glory.
Eighty years after the Town Hall was built, this superb restoration convincingly resuscitates its 1930’s civic ideals.
